Umoja, December 2003 at the Playhouse Theatre Durban

Back to past events

Umoja, which took place at the Durban Playhouse Theatre, was a joyous celebration of dynamic talent, thrilling energy, great voices, sensual dancing and the best of South African popular music, from Pata Pata to Pantsula Jive, from the Venda Snake Dance to Ladysmith Black Mambazo sounds. Umoja celebrated the songs that have become part of the rich tradition of South African music.

Umoja told the story of the growth of South African Music, from the powerful rhythms of tribal music to the intricate steps of gumboot dancing, the foot-stomping jazz of Sophia town, the uplifting full throated joy of Gospel and the pounding energy of Kwaito Pantsula.

The superbly talented cast of South Africa’s brightest and most versatile young performers (many of whom hail from disadvantaged communities) are carving a niche for themselves on the world stage. The world tour of Umoja was triumphantly launched on March 4th in Malmo Sweden after enjoying a hugely successful run in the London west end for 14 months.

All proceeds for the two day extravaganza were donated to the Unite Against Hunger Campaign, an organisation providing continued upliftment and support to disadvantaged communities in South Africa.
